Fermius Firefly

A Dream Log, whenever I remember the dreams I've had.

Fermius is a pen name drawn from a series of short fiction I wrote when I published the small press magazine Stellanova (on paper.) I play RPG games to escape from my daily grind as a technology wage slave for the state of California. I eat out a lot in order to do my part in supporting our increasingly service level economy. I am butler to 2 feline masters. If you ask them they will tell you I'm not very good at it, late with dinner, don't have enough hands with brushes in them, and sometimes I even lock them out of their office.

Who's there? Just Me.

I dreamed there was someone in the back yard. When I stepped out to see who was there, it was me. Only, not me. I had short hair, a long haired black and white cat and a fat wallet. It appears that I had, in another universe, invented, or rather worked with a team whod invented, a way to pass between the universes.

Unfortunately, there had been no provision made for getting the other me back to where he started out.

He was quite surprised to have arrived and discovered that I was not living in San Diego, but out here in the suburbs. Apparently, in that universe, I had not stayed with the school district at all, quitting when they made me re-apply for my own job and take the test that I had written. The other me had continued on to a four year college and then graduate school and finally a doctorate in physics. The other me was much better educated, but apparently had a much smaller place, only the one cat, and had never married.

Now, he and his cat were stranded in this world with a slightly different technology base.

We decided to get the other me introduced to the folks at UCSD, and there we were able to convince some people what had happened. (It took some genetic testing to show that we were and identical match, and my mother testifying that I was not actually a twin at all.) Eventually, through mathematics and such the other me was able to prove he was me, but from another time and place.

Interestingly, I kept getting invited to the same functions as the other me, and the team he put together at UCSD wanted me to be part of the research group. It was interesting working with myself. There were lots of similarities, many of the same interests, but the other me was used to being in charge of things, and I was not. It was somewhat reassuring that I still knew more about computers and such than the other me. (They were just a tool to him.)

We sat together at a large dinner on the eve of testing of our universe transmitter, and after he spoke he opened up the wormhole and began tuning the radio around, searching for his home-universe. He took a USB camera and several hard drives with him when he finally found the signal he was looking for, put his cat in one of my carriers and walked through the portal.

We planned on keeping in touch between the worlds via a tiny wormhole with a radio signal running full duplex between them.

Ad astra per technica,
